M. Lewis, ''A pastoral democracy: a study of pastoralism and politics among the Northern Somali of the Horn of Africa'', (LIT Verlag Münster: 1999), p.304.〕 He was the leader and founder of the Somali Youth League (SYL), Somalia's first political party. Having also been instrumental in the organization's creation, Sharmarke and other early SYL nationalists were strongly influenced by the religious rebellion at the turn of the century of Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan (the "Mad Mullah").〔 The SYL was established in 1943.
